De Beers, Swarovski flagships open in Tokyo

TokyoDe Beers and Swarovski both opened flagship stores in Tokyo this week in an attempt to gain a better foothold in the lucrative but crowded Japanese luxury market.

According to the South Africa-based Mail and Guardian online news service, the stores opened just blocks away from each other in the city's glitzy central Ginza district.

Competition in that area includes Bulgari, which opened in November, and Cartier.

To mark the opening, De Beers plans to display a 296.56-carat rough yellow diamond worth $2.2 million, and a $5 million 5.23-carat green diamond, according to the Mail and Guardian.

The two-level store will display its diamond collection and other jewelry, including high-end watches and bridal.

The Swarovski flagship store is the fourth in the world for the Swiss crystal jeweler, which also has stores in Boston, Hong Kong and London.

A crystal staircase made of steel and thousands of faceted crystals illuminated by background lighting will connect the two-story store.

Among the pieces on display will be a work called Crystal Forest made by Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka using thousands of prisms.

Yoshioka is known for his glasswork-like tables and chairs that look like they are covered in water.
