Johannesburg, South Africa—The Diamond Trading Co. (DTC) launched a new collection of diamond jewelry, the DTC Shining Light Awards Collection 2006-2007, on Feb. 20 at the Venue in Melrose Arch, located here.

The collection, titled "Our Diamond Dreams," is composed of 10 winning designs from the Shining Light Awards competition that celebrate diamonds as natural treasures and reflect their intrinsic value.

The Shining Light Awards competition honors designers from around South Africa and aims to provide support for the future of the South African jewelry industry by helping area designers develop both technical and design skills. It is also meant to create an ethos for South African jewelry design.

Nearly 1,000 designs from around South Africa were entered in the preliminary round. In July 2006, 10 designs were selected to make up the new collection. The panel of judges included Sindiswa Gaven, director of beneficiation economics from the Department of Minerals and Energy; Gary Cotterell, editor in chief of Business Day Wanted Magazine; and designers Cari-Mari Wilsenach and David Muller.

Tshwane University of Technology jewelry-design student Joyce Coetzee was the overall winner of the competition. Her magnificent bangle, sponsored by DTC sightholder Vancut DW (Pty) Ltd./Taché Co. NV, is featured in the collection. It was created in 18-karat yellow gold and is set with 668 round brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 22.55 carats.

As part of the competition, design workshops are held on a biennial basis around South Africa. The designers, who come from various sectors of the industry, can network with colleagues and benefit from the input of experts and guest speakers from around the country.

A highlight last year was Reema Pachachi, former creative director of De Beers Diamond Jewellers and visiting professor at the Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, who provided invaluable feedback to those participating.

The Shining Light Awards also include a sustainable development component, as the DTC awards five grants of $1,416 to five educational institutions.
