'Blood Diamond' nets five Oscar noms

Los Angeles—While Blood Diamond may have had little impact on diamond sales during the holiday season, the film got a second life this morning. Stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou were nominated for Academy Awards in the lead actor and supporting actor categories, respectively.

The film received a total of five nominations, rounded out by film editing, sound editing and sound mixing.

Since its release last month, Blood Diamond has received mixed reviews, and it has grossed nearly $51 million in the United States and close to $64 million worldwide, according to figures from the Internet Movie Database.

But with Warner Bros. putting Oscar campaign and marketing dollars behind the movie, it could get a box office boost from the nominations. It could also get more exposure this month as it opens in more cities across the world, including in the United Kingdom and in Israel.

This is DiCaprio's third Academy Award nomination. He was nominated for best supporting actor for What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1994, and for best actor for The Aviator in 2005. Hounsou has also been nominated before, as best supporting actor for In America in 2004. Neither actor has won an Oscar.

The winners will be announced on Feb. 25.
