Gaborone, Botswana—The government of Botswana and De Beers have appointed Brian McDonald as managing direct for the Diamond Trading Co. (DTC) Botswana, effective April 1.

Since 2005, McDonald has served as executive director responsible for sorting and purchasing at DTC in London. He began his tenure with the company in 1970 and has held various positions, including senior quality controller, deputy general manager and general manager of BDVC, the company whose operations will be transformed into the new DTC Botswana.

McDonald has years of experience in the diamond sorting, valuing and trading environments, as well as knowledge of the operations and management of BDVC and Botswana's labor and commercial environment.

"As a start-up operation, Diamond Trading Company Botswana will face many challenges, least of which will be the managing director's ability to function in a new environment," Akolang Tombale, the permanent secretary in Botswana's Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, said in a release issued Wednesday. "In selecting Brian, we were careful to ensure that the candidate has the requisite skills and experience to perform under these challenging conditions."

In addition to his experience at BDVC and the DTC, McDonald has worked with the Botswana government as a member of the Project Working Group, charged by shareholders to ensure a timely and efficient transformation of BDVC from a diamond sorting and valuing entity into a sorting, valuing and marketing company.

He will be responsible for transfer of skills, training of marketing and sales teams, consulting an executive team and developing policies that ensure a smooth transition from BDVC to DTC Botswana.

"One of our distinct contributions to the partnership is intimate knowledge of the industry and in this case, the downstream," said De Beers Group Managing Director Gareth Penny. "As a 50 percent shareholder in Diamond Trading Co. Botswana, De Beers is excited about the experience and skill that Brian will bring to the role."
