IGI expands Ramat Gan lab

July 14, 2009

Ramat Gan, Israel--Due to an increased demand for services, the International Gemological Institute (IGI) has expanded its full-service gemological laboratory in diamond trade center Ramat Gan.

IGI Israel's original 1,200-square-foot office, which it opened last September, has been expanded into a 3,500-square-foot workspace. The laboratory will continue to be housed in the Yahalom Building.

"We know the current economic situation is difficult and, more than ever, Israel needs a major laboratory to support efficient and successful trades within the industry," IGI Chief Executive Officer Roland Lorie said in a media release. "We look forward to providing the area with better and faster gemological services in our new space."

Prior to the Israel lab opening last September, the IGI had maintained a strong presence in the Israeli jewelry industry for more than eight years through its Diamond Window Service, an exclusive collection and distribution service that allowed clients to deposit items to be sent to the full-service IGI Antwerp laboratory. As a result of this success, and the fact that Israel is one of the three largest diamond wholesale markets in the world, the IGI opted to open the full-service gem-testing laboratory in Ramat Gan.

Plans for an IGI Israel Gemological School continue to be made, which will afford the Israeli diamond and gemstone industry the opportunity to earn a globally recognized IGI diploma in gemology.

Established in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1975, the IGI is an independent laboratory for testing and evaluating gemstones and fine jewelry. It is considered an ISO-accredited worldwide organization with locations in Bangkok, Thailand; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Hong Kong; Kolkata, India; Los Angeles; Mumbai, India; New Delhi, India; New York City; the Seepz Zone, India; Tel Aviv, Israel; Toronto; and Tokyo.
