GIA launches new Diamond Sealing Service

August 06, 2009
The Gemological Institute of America's new Diamond Sealing Service keeps the diamond and the report together in a secure package.

Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) unveiled a new Diamond Sealing Service on Wednesday.

GIA President and Chief Executive Officer Donna Baker made the announcement about the new service alongside GIA Managing Director for India and the Middle East Nirupa Bhatt at the IIJS Show in Mumbai, India, on Thursday.

According to the release, the new service seals the diamond with its key grading information in a credit card-sized, tamper-resistant package that keeps the stone, its report number and primary gemological details such as report date, shape and the Four C's, together in a secure, easy-to-display package.

There have been a number of reports in recent years regarding fraudulent grading certificates circulating in the diamond industry.

"GIA has been vigorously offering a wider array of services to accommodate the needs of its many different customers throughout the industry and the general public," Baker said in the release. "As we continue to expand globally, we're providing additional options and finding more opportunities to help solve customer problems in that market. In particular, we are interested in offering services that promote worldwide industry standards and reinforce consumer confidence."

Bhatt said in the release that there is an increase in the number of requests for some kind of report security, especially in India.

"As the world's largest diamond cutting and manufacturing center, India is also a clearing house for many diamond markets, some of which increasingly request this type of benefit," he said. "We are pleased to offer it to all our clients in this region and around the world."

The Diamond Sealing Service is offered for diamonds with D-Z color that carry a GIA Diamond Grading Report or Diamond Dossier Report, and for colored diamonds holding a GIA Colored Diamond Grading Report.

The service can be ordered at the time of grading for $9 per stone. A diamond can also be resubmitted for the service for the $9 charge, with an additional grading fee applied.

The service can be requested at all GIA Laboratory or take-in locations worldwide, as well as online through GIA's client portal "My Laboratory."
