GSI expands PhotospeX service

October 08, 2009
Gemological Science International is expending its PhotospeX light-analysis service worldwide as of October.

New York--New York-based lab Gemological Science International (GSI) announced today it is expanding its diamond-light analysis service, called PhotospeX, worldwide as of October, making the service available to more of its customers.

According to a news release, PhotospeX was introduced at the end of 2008 to a select group of GSI customers, including some major and mid-sized chains and large manufacturers.

And although GSI is expanding the service, "distribution continues to be limited to those customers who have branded products and better-cut stones," GSI President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Gershburg said in the release. "These include both U.S. as well as our expanding base of international clients."

Unlike the ray-tracing models typically used for light analysis today, PhotospeX is based on actual measurements of light behavior in each diamond. Its hardware uses light-emitting diode (LED) lights that have a long life span and consume little energy, thereby making them "green."

PhotospeX final results are available on screen in about 20 seconds.

The light analysis is compiled together with the Four C's of diamond grading on one GSI report.

According to the release, the reports are available in various sizes and formats and can be customized for specific brands.

In addition, as with all other GSI grading reports, PhotospeX information is available online in real time, and the results and reports can be viewed by interested parties anywhere in the world.

"PhotospeX is a real 21st-century product," Gershburg said in the release. "The technology behind both its hardware and software makes it more advanced than any other product on the market. That technology, coupled with GSI's deep understanding of gemology, results in a more comprehensive diamond evaluation."

For more information about PhotospeX products, contact GSI's Executive Vice President Debbie Azar at 212-207-4140 ext. 202 or debbie@gemscience.net.
