Australian lab reports undisclosed treated diamonds

Aussie lab issues laser-inscription alert

Sydney, Australia--The Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia (DCLA) reports an "alarming" increase in the number of treated diamonds being submitted to the lab as natural diamonds.

In a press release issued by the Sydney, Australia-based laboratory, the lab points out that there is nothing intrinsically wrong with diamond treatments, provided that the treatment is fully disclosed and that the buyer pays the appropriate price for the diamond.

Too often, however, the presence of diamond treatments are concealed, the release states. These treatments not only reduce a diamond's value but also are unstable and reversible.

For this reason, all internationally accepted rules for diamond grading forbid the certification of treated diamonds, according to the release.

Despite this fact, the DCLA recently came across a coated diamond accompanied by a certificate from a "supposedly legitimate" Australian lab, the release states.

In an effort to protect consumers, the lab currently is offering "Diamond Amnesty" for diamond owners all over Australia. This includes verifying and testing for treatments any diamond brought into the lab with its matching grading certificate. This service will be provided free of charge.
