AGS to be primary grader for Royal Asscher Cut

New York--American Gem Society Laboratories is set to introduce a Light Performance Diamond Quality Report for the Royal Asscher Cut and will be the primary grader of this cut in the United States, according to a release from Royal Asscher.

The agreement between the two companies follows extensive research by AGS Labs to determine a cut grade for the Royal Asscher Cut based on its light-performance cut-grade methodology.

Lita Asscher, president of Royal Asscher of America, said the Royal Asscher Cut took two years to develop and there are "distinct and crucial differences" between a Royal Asscher Cut diamond, a regular Asscher-cut diamond and a square emerald-cut diamond.

"By working with AGS Laboratories, we aim to further educate the jeweler and consumer market about the key differences between the two cuts and simultaneously protect our patent," Asscher said. "Through this exclusive grading program, AGS Laboratories recognizes the intellectual property rights of our company as proprietary-cut manufacturers. Likewise, we recognize AGS Laboratories as an authority in diamond grading and believe this will be a mutually beneficial strategic alliance for both companies."

Royal Asscher is a family-owned company based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with offices in the United States. Founded in 1854, the company is under its fifth and sixth generation of family leadership. It is responsible for the design of the original Asscher-cut diamond, completed by Joseph Asscher in 1902.

Current company President Edward Asscher designed and introduced the patented Royal Asscher Cut diamond in 2002.
