U.S. rough, polished trade still at low levels

Ramat Gan, Israel--U.S. net polished-diamond imports totaled $338.2 million in July, a modest increase from June but still well below 2008 levels, IDEX Online reports.

According to IDEX Online, gross imports of 1.02 million carats were valued at $1.21 billion, averaging $1,185 per carat. That represents a 23.7 percent year-over-year decline in volume, a 40 percent decline in value and a 21.3 percent decline in average value.

Gross exports of polished diamonds totaled $874.9 million, averaging $406.14 per carat.

Polished exports of 2.15 million carats far exceeded imports but, in value, imports exceeded exports, a trend that has been occurring all year.

On the rough side, according to IDEX Online, net rough-diamond imports to the United States were $14.45 million in July, a 74.3 percent year-over-year decline.

South Africa continues to be the United States' leading source of rough diamonds, shipping $8.94 million worth of goods, followed by Canada with $2.92 million.

The volume of net imports stood at 50,326 carats, an average value of $287 per carat.

Gross imports of 97,516 carats worth $23.48 million declined 74.9 percent and 75.8 percent, respectively, year-over-year.

In terms of rough exports, the United States exported $9.03 million worth of rough in July, a 78 percent decline from July 2008, before the onset of the global economic crisis, according to IDEX Online.

About half of the United States' rough-diamond exports, $4.56 million worth of goods averaging $1,717.64 per carat, were shipped to Israel.

The average value of rough exports in July was $191.34 per carat, compared with $637.28 in July 2008.

The average value of rough imports also is down, from $1,741.43 in July 2008 to $240.75 this July.
