Young CEOs study Hearts on Fire at Harvard

February 04, 2010

Boston--A Harvard Business School professor who wanted to give a class of young chief executive officers a real-world example of a successful business strategy chose diamond company Hearts on Fire as a case study in smart branding.

The Young Presidents Organizations (YPO), a global networking organization for young professionals who are chief executives officers or presidents of sizable companies, recently held its annual YPO University at Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Mass. One of the instructors, Harvard Professor Das Narayandas, chose Boston-based Hearts on Fire for his presentation to the class, according to a company press release.

"Hearts on Fire is a very rich case to help the YPO'ers understand the complexities involved in successfully developing a luxury brand in a predominately undifferentiated market," Narayandas said in the release.

Hearts on Fire, founded in 1996 by Glenn and Susan Rothman, has been the subject of several Harvard Business School case studies over the past several years.

More than 500 CEOs and presidents representing all industries and hailing from more than 30 countries took part in the program. Among the participants were Jonathan Goldman, chief executive officer of New York-based jewelry manufacturer Frederick Goldman, and Nirav Modi, chairman of Firestone International, a Mumbai, India-based diamond company.

Goldman described the Hearts on Fire case as being "fun" to study.

"Glenn [Rothman] brings a great perspective to the jewelry industry," he said.
