Dallas Rocks to benefit D.E.F., honor Bush twins

November 02, 2009

New York--Dallas Rocks, an annual gala event benefiting the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.), is just around the corner, with highlights set to include an auction and the presentation of the "Rising Star Empowerment Award" to Bush twins Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager.

Taking place on Nov. 14 at Dallas' historic Union Station, the event will be hosted by D.E.F. founder Russell Simmons and Anthony Anderson of Law and Order.

Founded in 2007 to raise funds for programs that empower through education in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource, the D.E.F. currently benefits CIDA City Campus and African Leadership Academy, both based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

At the 2008 Dallas Rocks event, guests raised nearly $250,000 for the D.E.F.

At this year's gala, the sale of tickets--which run from $150 for a "Pave After-Party" ticket, all the way up to $750 for a "Green Diamond" ticket--will benefit the D.E.F., as will an auction including fine diamond jewelry, travel excursions, unique celebrity experiences and award-winning designs from the Women's Jewelry Association's 2009 Diva Awards.

Vanessa and Angela Simmons, daughters of Justine and Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons, and nieces of Russell Simmons, will present the "Rising Star Empowerment Award" to Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager for their dedication to helping improve lives. Bush is president and co-founder of Global Health Corps, is on the board of advisors for Covenant House International and is an active member of UNICEF's Next Generation Steering Committee. Bush Hager, a teacher in Baltimore, Md., and Today show contributing correspondent, is chair of UNICEF's Next Generation.

Additional honorees include Marilyn Auger, founder of the Marilyn Auger Family Foundation, a Dallas-based non-profit that seeks to break the cycle of poverty, and Dikembe Mutombo, a former NBA player and well-known humanitarian who founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation to improve living conditions in his native Congo.

Legendary singer, songwriter and record producer Smokey Robinson is set to perform, and guests will also include two-time Superbowl winner Ray Crockett and his wife, April, as well as Heidi Dillon, a prominent Dallas socialite and founder of the non-profit organization The Fashionistas Inc.

Tickets for Dallas Rocks can be purchased online at the event's Web site, DallasRocks.org.
