Montblanc charity auction nets $224K for UNICEF

September 21, 2009

Los Angeles--It has been more than half a year since Montblanc first unveiled a group of celebrity portraits that would later be sold at auction to benefit UNICEF, but the anticipation has been well worth it.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, the brand invited Hollywood's best and brightest to the Los Angeles "Montblanc Gala and Auction to Benefit UNICEF," which, by the end of the night, achieved a total of $224,000 for UNICEF's worldwide efforts to improve education and literacy.

The company stated earlier this year that through the portrait auction, as well as through additional global fund-raising activities, it was hoping to raise more than $1.5 million for UNICEF in 2009. With the recent sale, Montblanc is very close to reaching its intended goal.

Photographed by Roger Moenks and featuring leading actresses portraying their favorite literary heroines, the portraits made their debut in Los Angeles early this year before embarking on an international tour, stopping in New York, London and Hong Kong.

Actresses photographed for the project included Emily Blunt, Marcia Cross, Helen Hunt, Lauren Hutton, Mila Jovovich, Jessica Lange, Eva Longoria, Andie MacDowell, Sienna Miller, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon and Mira Sorvino.

Among the guests converging at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel for the Sept. 17 auction were actresses Katie Cassidy, Rachel Griffiths and Perry Reeves, actors Anil Kapoor, Billy Zane and Jack Huston, and television hosts Catt Sadler and Cat Deeley, among others.

Each portrait sold was accompanied by a one-of-a-kind Montblanc writing instrument made of 18-karat gold, blue sapphires and white diamonds.

"We are really thrilled about tonight's auction result," Montblanc International Chief Executive Officer Lutz Bethge said during the event. "In times like these, we are very grateful that there is such strong support globally for the work Montblanc is doing to benefit UNICEF. There is still much to be done to make education available to all children, but the funds raised tonight will certainly help in our continued efforts."
