Designer's jewelry shows Obama's message of hope

The "Praise" necklace from Jeanine Payer's "Elements of Change" collection starts off with a passage that reads: "Love beyond marital, filial, national, love that casts a widening pool of light, love with no need to pre-empt grievance."

San Francisco--Jewelry designer Jeanine Payer has launched a new collection of six designs featuring excerpts from President Barack Obama's inauguration poem by Elizabeth Alexander.

The collection, dubbed "Elements of Change," launched April 1 in recognition of National Poetry Month and was inspired by Alexander's poem, "Praise Song for the Day," which Payer heard while watching Obama's Jan. 20 inauguration.

Payer's signature designs feature diminutive, hand-engraved words, and after Payer wrote about the poem on her company's blog, a fan messaged the designer and asked her to incorporate passages from the poem into her designs.

"I reached out to Ms. Alexander to give her a gift--a piece with her poem engraved onto it--and the dialog turned into a collaboration," Payer said in a media release. "Her words about love and possibility are perfect for the art I make. It has been a fun and exhilarating project for not only me but for my staff, especially after the challenges my small company has gone through in order to survive in this economic downturn. This project has had an energizing effect for all of us here and this is an exciting collection."

The collection includes three necklaces and three bracelets offered in sterling silver and 14-karat gold, all emblematic of the designer's signature style.

Since Elements of Change's debut, the collection has been gifted to First Lady Michelle Obama, her daughters, Oprah Winfrey and other select women who are working to advance Obama's message of hope, according to the designer.
