Stone raises money for AIDS cause

While hosting a benefit for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), actress and hostess of the event Sharon Stone auctioned off her own necklace at a guest's request. The piece Stone was wearing was not listed as an item for sale, yet she removed the wing-shaped pendant and put it on the auction block. The necklace, which she said she loved as she removed the clasp, sold for $50,000. Organizers said the benefit raised a total of $1.35 million.

The candlelit auction, which took place Friday night in Rome, was held on the sidelines of the Rome Film Festival. Film director Sofia Coppola, model Eva Herzigova and actress Mira Sorvino were in attendance. Stone and the other celebrities autographed a Fendi trademark "baguette" purse, which sold for $60,000. Another big-ticket item was a work of art by Italian contemporary artist Francesco Vezzoli, which sold for $200,000.

AmfAR said it has invested $260 million in its programs and has awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams since 1985.
