Dallas auction to showcase Mexican silver

This Mexican silver necklace will be among the pieces on the auction block at Heritage Auction Galleries' March 19 sale.

Dallas--Heritage Auction Galleries will host a sale of important Mexican silver jewelry designs, with pieces by designer luminaries such as William Spratling, Antonio Pineda, Hector Aguilar and Fred Davis, among others.

Highlights of the "Signature Silver and Vertu" auction, which will take place on March 19 at Heritage's Design District Annex in Dallas, include a Hector Aguilar Mexican silver necklace circa 1940, a Fred Davis Mexican silver and amethyst quartz cuff circa 1935, and a William Spratling Mexican silver hummingbird necklace made between 1964 and 1967. Mexican silver designs featuring obsidian by Antonio Pineda and Salvador Teran will also be up for sale, as will a Mexican silver and leather belt made by Hector Aguilar.

Mexico has long been recognized for the high quality of silver it produces and the skill of the designers that have utilized it. According to Heritage, silver designs from Mexico were brought to the forefront of the modernistic design movement in 1930 when, beginning with American expatriate Spratling, workshops in the colonial silver-mining center of Taxco multiplied. The workshops produced beautifully designed silver that drew on the rich native artistic heritage of Mexico while also exhibiting thoroughly modern features.

Heritage's Silver and Vertu specialist department was established in 2008, and an inaugural sale was held in May of that year, achieving what the auction house described as "remarkable results." Heritage says it expects similar results for the March auction. In addition to the Mexican silver pieces, bidders will also have a wide array of additional offerings available to them, including selections of jewelry from Georg Jensen and Tapio Wirkkula, among others.

"This is an important new opportunity for us," Heritage Director of Silver and Vertu Tim Rigdon said in a media release. "We've already developed a solid reputation for quality silver auctions, and the addition of this important jewelry, by name designers, will further cement our place in the business as a vital venue for consignors and buyers of fine silver."
