Hip-hop jewelry goes on the block

New York—Phillips de Pury and Co. is changing up its usual lineup of contemporary art auctions by putting a whole lot of bling on the block is an auction titled "Hip Hop's Crown Jewels."

The Oct. 1 sale will be the first-ever auction of historic hip-hop jewelry, pioneering a new collecting category, the auction house said in a media release.

Around 50 iconic pieces worn by some of hip-hop's biggest stars, including 50 Cent, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, the late Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur will be featured.

Among the pieces to hit the block are Notorious B.I.G.'s yellow gold and stainless steel Rolex watch with diamond bezel, Sean "Diddy" Combs' princess- and baguette-cut diamond and platinum bracelet, and Lil' Jon's "Crunk Ain't Dead" pendant, crafted in gold with colorless and yellow diamonds, and documented in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest diamond pendant.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Rush Community Affairs, Russell Simmons' coalition of nonprofit organizations, which include the Diamond Empowerment Fund, the Hip Hop Summit Action Network and Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.
