The Kokoshnik tiara by Cartier, circa 1908.

Carlsbad, Calif.—As part of the Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) Diamond Anniversary Gala, which kicked off the 4th International Gemological Symposium on Aug. 27, the GIA Museum opened its doors to a new jewelry exhibit titled "Celebrating Excellence in Gems and Jewelry."

Each piece in the exhibit is considered exceptional either for historical significance or outstanding design, while the loose gems and crystals come from unique places or display outstanding shape, color or size, according to the GIA.

Highlights of the collection include the Hooker Emerald Brooch and the Bismarck Sapphire Necklace, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution; a 1908 Kokoshnik tiara, courtesy of Cartier; and a fancy-colored-diamond floral brooch by Bulgari, circa 1960, on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. The exhibit also includes pieces from the GIA's recently acquired Gubelin Collection of gems.

Most pieces in the exhibit are on loan from museums, private collections and design houses around the world.
