Stars select classy, conservative Oscar looks

Los Angeles—Hollywood's leading ladies chose classy, conservative styles for last night's 79th Annual Academy Awards, with strapless or one-shoulder gowns, sleek hair and red lips as the top trends.

Jewelry was mainly limited to diamond bracelets and earrings, as stars selected gowns with enough embellishment to stand on their own.

Crystals and jewels were sewn into the asymmetrical Giorgio Armani Privé gowns worn by Beyoncé Knowles and Cate Blanchett, the lavender Marchesa gown worn by Jennifer Lopez and the one-shoulder Proenza Schouler gown worn by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Champagne and blush were the top color trends of the night, appearing on Gwyneth Paltrow, in a chiffon and tulle gown by Zac Posen; Penelope Cruz, in a strapless, silk chiffon, organza and tulle gown by Versace; and Helen Mirren, in an embroidered gown by Christian Lacroix.
