Bling wins big on Oscar night

February 26, 2007

Hollywood, Calif.—Any concern that Blood Diamond and its five Oscar nominations (including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor) would cause Hollywood to turn its back on diamonds was unfounded. In the end, the film came away with no Oscars and no measurable impact on the celebrity psyche. Throughout awards season and culminating at last night's Academy Awards, bling remained the thing.

Leading the diamond hit parade were bracelets, right-hand rings and earrings. Standouts included: Nicole Kidman, in one-of-a-kind diamond cuffs featuring 187 rough diamonds totaling 375 carats from designer L'Wren Scott and manufacturer William Goldberg; and Gwyneth Paltrow, in diamond cuffs, diamond bracelets and rose-cut-diamond chandelier earrings by Fred Leighton.

Many starlets skipped the necklaces and focused on their wrists, as diamond bracelets were among the most jewelry popular trends. Diamond cuffs and stackable bracelets were worn by Anne Hathaway, in three diamond bracelets by Van Cleef and Arpels; Emily Blunt, in a black- and white-diamond cuff by H. Stern; Best Actress nominee Penelope Cruz, in a yellow- and white-diamond flower bracelet by Chopard; and last year's Best Actress winner, Reese Witherspoon, in a diamond cuff bracelet by Van Cleef and Arpels.

In addition to getting their hair and makeup right, many finished off their look with diamond earrings. That included Best Actress winner, Helen Mirren, in pear-shaped-diamond cluster earrings by Chopard; Best Actress nominee Kate Winslet, in 54-carat pear-shaped yellow-diamond cluster earrings by Chopard; and Jennifer Lopez, in 20-carat gray- and champagne-diamond earrings with rose-cut peach-diamond drops, by Lorraine Schwartz, valued at $280,000.

Another hot item was the diamond right-hand ring, worn by Best Supporting Actress winner, Jennifer Hudson, in a brown-diamond right-hand ring by Fred Leighton; and last year's Best Supporting Actress winner, Rachel Weisz, in an Art Deco-style diamond right-hand ring from the Cartier Private Collection.

Diamonds weren't just for the ladies. Best Actor winner, Forest Whitaker, sported a green rubber, stainless steel and diamond bracelet worth $2,500, from the Simmons Jewelry Co.'s Green Initiative collection, which supports the Diamond Empowerment Fund. Whitaker also donned a diamond watch from Chris Aire. Best Supporting Actor nominee Eddie Murphy was also in Chris Aire, wearing 2-carat diamond studs.
