MJSA to spotlight innovative products

Providence, R.I.--Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) will spotlight innovative technological advances in jewelry design and manufacturing at the upcoming MJSA Expo New York.

On March 8, the MJSA will honor three recipients in its "Thinking Ahead" Awards, an annual showcase of products that are making the greatest differences in the way jewelry is being designed and made. This year's winners include eXtrusion Patterned Metal (XPM), the Dual-Action Electro-Finishing System and the V-Ray rendering application for the Matrix CAD program.

Together, the inventions vastly improve mass-finishing, mokume production and CAD renderings, and all offer multiple benefits, from speed and cost savings to new material and design options.

Employing hot extrusion and a proprietary technique for packing metals together, the XPM method, created by Steve Midgett and Jim Binnion, solves multiple shortcomings of traditional mokume, specifically the ability to combine an almost limitless variety of metals. XPM can also be used to create and replicate specific patterns, as well as to produce mokume in volume: 107-cubic-inch bars, compared with the half cubic inch or less typically created the traditional way.

The Dual-Action Electro-Finishing System mass-finishes silver jewelry in one hour and does so with less metal loss and without the rounded-out effect of other systems, the MJSA said in a media release. Invented by Marc Sarsanedas Gimpera of Supramol.lecular Systems S.L. in Spain, the finishing system uses electrolytic erosion and mechanical interaction to leave flat surfaces smooth and silky, edges intact and sharp, and stones shiny and lustrous.

The final winner, Gemvision's V-Ray for Matrix, produces photorealistic renderings within minutes, delivering both fast and high-quality results and greatly improving its usefulness as a sales tool.

The recipients of the 2009 Thinking Ahead Awards were chosen by an international panel of independent judges.
