H. Stern founder Hans Stern dies

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—Founder and chairman of the board of H. Stern Jewelers, Hans Stern, died on Oct. 26 at the age of 85.

Stern was born in Essen, Germany, in 1922, and immigrated to Brazil with his family in 1939. He founded H. Stern in 1945, and become internationally renowned for introducing the world to his country's colored gemstones, giving birth to Brazil's fine-jewelry industry and the trade of colored gemstones worldwide.

The funeral was held privately in Rio de Janeiro.
