New York--Nearly 500 jewelry industry professionals and media representatives turned out for the Jewelry Information Center's (JIC) seventh annual Gem Awards, held on Jan. 9 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York.

Recognized at the event this year were Russell Simmons for Jewelry Style, Harper's Bazaar Editor in Chief Glenda Bailey for Excellence in Journalism and Chopard for Tradition of Excellence for Corporation Communications.

Presenters included rap artist LL Cool J, who presented the Jewelry Style award to his longtime friend and mentor Simmons.

"Russell is, and continues to be, a powerful force in bringing the influence of hip-hop to the world through his groundbreaking achievements in music, film, fashion, philanthropy and recently the jewelry industry through the Russell Simmons Jewelry Co.," LL Cool J said on stage while presenting the award.

Other presenters for the evening were: Tony Duquette President and Designer Hutton Wilkinson, who introduced Bailey, and Saks Fifth Avenue President and Chief Marketing Officer Ron Frasch, who presented Chopard's award to Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele, the co-president and creative director of the company who accepted the award on its behalf.

Samantha Harris, co-host of ABC's Dancing with the Stars, served as mistress of ceremonies for the Gem Awards.

In addition to honoring key industry players, the evening also featured the launch of the JIC's new consumer marketing initiative. The centerpiece of the initiative is a newly design JIC Web site, JIC.org, that invites visitors to "Tell Your Jewelry Story" while directing them to retail jewelry stores across the country.

Site visitors can submit personal stories about their jewelry and photos, save and share their product preferences, rate products and educate themselves through interactive tools.
