Centurion honors emerging jewelry designers

Merrick, N.Y.—Centurion 2009 has named the winners of the first-ever Centurion Emerging Designer Awards.

The three winners, Alexandra Hart, Mark Maxwell and Uwe Schlappner, will each make their fine-jewelry trade show debut at the upcoming Centurion show, to be held in Tucson, Ariz., from Jan. 31-Feb. 4, 2009.

The competition was created to give up-and-coming designers from around the world the opportunity to exhibit in front of top retail stores.

Entries for this and future Centurion Emerging Designer Awards are open to all designers, regardless of experience, formal training or background in jewelry design. The stipulations include that the designer must never have exhibited as a solo artist but must have the ability to exhibit at a high-end trade show and be able to supply to top retail stores.

Entries for the 2009 contest were judged in early September by a panel of established designers, including Michael Good, Barbara Heinrich, Bernd Munsteiner, George Sawyer and Peter Schmid.

Alexandra Hart of San Diego, Calif., creates one-of-a-kind and limited-edition jewelry in dramatic sculptural forms. Her collection retails between $400 and $10,000.

Mark Maxwell of Vista, Calif., blends traditional goldsmith artistry with contemporary style and sophisticated manufacturing techniques, using Basse Taille-style vitreous enamel. His collection retails between $1,000 and $25,000.

The final winner, Uwe Schlappner, hails from Biblis, Germany, and offers new interpretations of classic styles and elements. His collection retails between $1,000 and $20,000.
