Claudia Kretchmer takes over father's company

Palenville, N.Y.—Claudia Kretchmer, daughter of jewelry designer Steven Kretchmer, has stepped into the role of design director for her father's eponymous company.

Steven Kretchmer died in a motorcycle crash last July, and his wife and business partner, Alma Kretchmer, died after a long illness in January.

Claudia Kretchmer's three advanced degrees in astrophysics illustrate a love of science she shared with her father, who infused his jewelry designs with innovative metallurgy techniques.

"While Claudia's training is science, her natural design sense and artistic talent has come to the forefront in this year of family challenge," Jeweler's Resource Bureau founder and president Cindy Edelstein said in a statement.

The new design director has already received industry accolades: She took first place in the platinum category in the Town and Country Awards held during the Couture show last month.

Steven Kretchmer Design is known for its patented design techniques and processes, including tension setting and several metal alloys such as the magnetized platinum alloy called Polarium.
