New York says 'G'Day' to Australia's pink diamonds

Rio Tinto made sure stars like Aussie supermodel Kristy Hinze  were decked out in Argyle's pink diamonds for the G'Day USA Australia Week bash in Manhattan.

New York--When G'Day USA Australia Week, a traveling showcase of the best of Australian culture and business, arrived in New York City last week, pink diamonds had a starring role in the festivities.

Rio Tinto, the mining company that counts Australia's Argyle mine--the world's largest producer of pink diamonds--among its holdings, was a supporting sponsor of the Australia Week program and had a unique opportunity to dress celebrities attending the New York Black Tie Gala in rare pieces of Argyle pink diamond jewelry.

Among those wearing the designs were Australian supermodel Kristy Hinze, who donned L.J. West's "Argyle Finest Pink Diamond Bracelet" with 204 marquise- and radiant-cut Argyle pink diamonds, and Australia actress Ursula Yovich, who wore Calleija's "Kimberly Rose" necklace, valued at around $1 million. Catherine Martin, costume designer and wife of famed director Baz Luhrmann, wore L.J. West's "Pink and Green Ring" featuring a 3.42-carat, fancy-intense Argyle pink diamond.

During the event, Rio Tinto presented an award to Luhrmann for his contributions to the Australian film industry. His most recent movie, Australia, showcases the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, home of the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Rio Tinto also used the festive platform as a way to showcase a number of one-of-a-kind stones from the Argyle Pink Diamond Tender, rarely before seen in a public forum.

"Argyle Pink Diamonds are both symbolic, culturally, and highly prized, globally," Jean-Marc Lieberherr, general manager of Rio Tinto's diamond sales and marketing, said in a media release. "We are delighted to be here to tell the remarkable story of the world's rarest diamonds and to display these fine examples of truly master craftsmanship."
