Charles and Colvard names first 'Woman of Brilliant Achievement'
April 01, 2008
New York—Charles and Colvard, the global source of lab-created moissanite, has kicked off its "Women of Brilliant Achievement" program, naming Dr. Christy Shaffer, president and chief executive officer of Inspire Pharmaceuticals, as its first honoree. Women of Brilliant Achievement was created to honor select women from across the country for their outstanding professional achievements, leadership, inspirational qualities and contributions to their community. The program, in coordination with Charles and Colvard's newest Web site, Brillanceofme.com, aim to celebrate the spirit and achievement of women everywhere, and is just one of the ways that the company is reaching adult women, its key demographic. Women of Brilliant Achievement will be a permanent fixture on Brillianceofme.com, with honorees and their stories being rolled out throughout the year. In addition, the Web site will also feature testimonials and interviews with women who love moissanite, plus a monthly newsletter, insider blog of the latest happenings at Charles and Colvard, and tips and trends from the worlds of fashion and jewelry. "Based on research to date, we discovered that online is the best place to create an interactive marketing tool," Charles and Colvard Chief Executive Officer Bob Thomas said in a media release. "We hope it will not only celebrate the successes of women everywhere, but also simultaneously stimulate interest in moissanite." As the first program honoree, Dr. Christy Shaffer will receive a pair of platinum martini stud earrings set with round brilliant moissanite jewels totaling 4 carats, valued at $2,995. All future winners will receive the same gift. In addition, Charles and Colvard will donate a pair of 2-carat total weight studs set in 14-karat white gold, valued at $1,699, in the recipient's name to the charity of their choice. Shaffer became president and CEO of Durham, N.C.-based Inspire Pharmaceuticals in 1998. Under her tenure, Inspire became a publicly traded company in 2000 and has been named one of The Scientist's Best Places to Work in Industry and one of Business North Carolina's Best Employers in North Carolina. She has received a number of notable awards, including the YWCA Academy of Women 2007 Award in Science and Technology, the Council for Entrepreneurial Development Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence in 2004 and Business Woman of the Year in New Carolina, 2003 and 2004, by the Business Advisory Council in Washington, D.C. Shaffer serves on several nonprofit organization boards, supports many charities and mentors young scientists, all of which she balances with family life.
