Jewelry exhibit shines with 'Luxe Life'

Patriotic-inspired pieces, Hollywood-influenced items and contemporary jewelry are being shown in an exhibit entitled "Luxe Life: Masterpieces of American Jewelry." The exhibit is being held at Carnegie Museum of Natural History in the newly installed Wertz Gallery, which also houses the museum's permanent collection of gems and jewels.

Three major dioramas display American jewelry design spanning from the mid-19th century to present in natural settings that represent tropical, mountain and celestial landscapes. Guest curator Charles Scheips said the exhibit "sort of mirrors American history itself, our progress."

Josephine Baker's calling-card case, a belt belonging to Cole Porter's wife, Linda, and a Mauboussin cuff bracelet worn by Mae West are included in the special exhibit, which runs through Jan 6.
