New York—The Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) has awarded $21,000 in student scholarships to 15 jewelry students from 12 schools.

WJA awards the annual scholarships based on slides of three finished pieces by each student, who must be enrolled in a U.S. jewelry or watch design program. Awardees were announced Friday.

WJA's top scholarship, the $4,000 June Herman Scholarship, went to Terri Valencia, an Arizona State University student working toward a bachelor of fine arts degree in metalsmithing.

Second place scholarships of $3,500 each, went to Stacey Webber of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Rebecca Barton of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

The third place award of $2,000 went to Carol Salisbury of Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Scholarships of $1,000 each went to Rebecca Beals of East Tennessee State University, Fu-Ya Chen of Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Iris Lin of California State University at Long Beach, Alexandra Speer of the Rhode Island School of Design, and Stacey Van Waldick of Syracuse University.

Scholarships of $750 each went to Susan Bellflower of the Virginia Commonwealth University, Molly Strader of Indiana University at Bloomington, and Laura Wood of the University of Georgia.

Scholarships of $250 each went to three students at the Nicolas G. Hayek Watchmaking School in Secaucus, N.J.: Kristina DeLane, Angela Shibley-Webb and Anna Vakhilt.

The top four winners will also receive a scholarship to attend Rio Grande's Clasp Conference, which focuses on jewelry making, to be held in Denver in September, courtesy of the Bell Group.

Scholarship funds were raised from the proceeds of WJA's Silent Auction, held during its annual Awards for Excellence gala in July 2006, as well as from contributions from companies and individuals, including: the June Herman Fund, David B. Rosenberg Scholarship Fund, Gumuchian Fils Ltd. Fund, Helene Fortunoff Fund, Kaiser-Time Jewelry Fund, M. Markman-Suberi Bros. Fund, Phyllis and Ira Bergman Fund, Samuel Aaron Co. Scholarship Fund, the Marilyn DaSilva Fund, and the Dione and William Kenyon Fund.

The next WJA Student Scholarship applications will become available early in 2008. For further information, visit
