New York—Jewelers of America (JA) has named four first-place winners in its 18th annual Affiliate Design Competition, held during the recent JA New York Winter Show.

The competition features unique jewelry that has won design contests sponsored by JA's regional affiliates throughout 2007. In addition, JA expanded the competition this year to allow submissions from JA member jewelers whose affiliate organization did not hold a local competition.

A panel of industry experts judged a total of 30 entries on craftsmanship, marketability, practicality/wearability and overall design in three categories (based on the cost of materials used): $1,000 and under, $1,001-$3,000 and $3,001 and over.

The top winner in category I ($1,000 and under) is Steven Kistner of Steven Paul Designs in Delafield, Wis., representing the Wisconsin Jewelers Association. Kistner's design is a gentleman's ring in 14-karat white gold with 12 trapezoidal pieces (nine that move) inlayed with black onyx and diamonds.

The category II winner ($1,001-$3,000) is Joel Wiland of J. David Jewelry in Broken Arrow, Okla., representing the Oklahoma Jewelers Association. Wiland crafted a large blue topaz pendant set over a selection of trilliant and round diamonds on a white gold omega chain.

Taking home first prize in category III ($3,001 and over) is Ziad H. Noshie of Almaza Jewelers in Houston, representing the Texas Jewelers Association. Ziad's luxurious prizewinner is a necklace and earrings set in 18-karat white gold with more than 600 pavé-set diamonds and 11 freshwater pearls.

This platinum and 18-karat yellow gold pendant, crafted by Dale Hurt, winner of the Buyer's Choice Award, features tanzanite, pink tourmaline, an opal doublet and diamonds.
JA New York attendees determined the winner of a fourth honor, the Buyer's Choice Award, which goes to Dale Hurt of Gold-N-Designs in Lee's Summit, Mo. Representing the Missouri Jewelers and Watchmakers Association, Hurt's winning entry is a platinum and 18-karat yellow gold pendant with tanzanite, pink tourmaline, an opal doublet and diamonds.

"Jewelers of America is pleased to recognize the talents of regional jewelers, whose designs demonstrate the remarkable jewelry available from our members nationwide," JA Chairman John Green of Lux Bond and Green said in a media release. "We congratulate all the contestants on their award-winning designs."

JA members interested in participating in next year's competition must first enter the design competition held by their state or regional JA affiliate. For more information, call (800) 223-0673 or visit JA's Web site, Jewelers.org.
