Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has named the three winners in this year's George A. Schuetz Design Contest, an annual competition established to recognize the best original designs in men's jewelry and accessories.

Graduate gemologist Erik Stewart of Tucson, Ariz., picked up first place for his "Phoenix" cuff links and ring set. The cuff links are made of 950 palladium with 18-karat yellow gold cylinder accents set with padparadscha. The ring is set with a 1.25-carat oval-cut padparadscha with an 18-karat gold bezel and inner band and outer 950 palladium band.

As first-prize winner, Stewart receives $500 and a crystal trophy.

Second-prize winner is Joana Miranda of Milwaukee, Wis., for a pair of cuff links designed with a yin and yang pattern. The palladium cuff links feature 7.5-millimeter black and white akoya pearls, bead-set melee diamonds and millegrain detail.

Rounding out third place was another pair of cuff links, designed by Stacey Liem of Carlsbad, Calif. Liem's cuff links were crafted in platinum and set with sapphires.

Both Miranda and Liem will receive a crystal trophy to acknowledge their accomplishments.

All 102 entries to this year's contest were judged on overall design, wearability, manufacturability and appeal.
