Revere Academy awards first 'New Student Scholarship'

San Francisco—The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts, a professional jewelry school located in downtown San Francisco, has awarded its first "New Student Scholarship" to Debbie Fehrenbach of St. Johns, Mich.

Fehrenbach, an amateur jewelry-maker, will receive a full scholarship for a three-day class of her choice, as well as all-expense paid travel and lodging.

Scholarship applicants were asked to submit images of their own work and to answer two questions: "Why are you qualified to win?" and "Why do you want to attend the Revere Academy?"

Fehrenback was chosen from among more than 150 entries, some from as far away as Asia.

"We were amazed to see how many people want to learn to make jewelry," Revere Academy founder and director Alan Revere said in a statement. "It was nearly impossible to select just one winner. With this response, we have decided to hold the contest again next year."

The bulk of this year's scholarship fund came from the auction of two sculptural pieces by prominent guest instructors. Michael Good of Michael Good Designs in Rockport, Maine, and James Binnion of James Binnion Metal Arts in Bellingham, Wash., taught in adjoining classrooms at the Revere Academy last year, and collaborated on two small, experimental sculptures using Bibbion's Japanese mokumé-gane for the metal and Good's use of anticlastic raising to create the form. The works were later auctioned to Revere Academy students and staff.
