Sotheby's Europe announces fall auctions
September 14, 2007
London—Sotheby's Europe is entering its fall season, with highlights including everything from the best of British jewelry to important watches and jewelry to animal-inspired baubles. Up first in the season is Sotheby's London's Sept. 14-18 "London Rocks" selling exhibition, showcasing jewelry pieces by high-profile and cutting-edge British designers such as Zoe Arnold, Elizabeth Gage, Andrew Grima, Fred Rich and Stephen Webster, among others. Prices will range from about $2,000 to $200,000. Sotheby's London's "Antique and Contemporary Jewels" auction will take place from Sept. 30-Oct. 3. The sale will include a nine-piece collection of jewelry by clothing designer Roberto Capucci. Capucci designed during the 1950s and '60s, and began creating jewelry to complement his gowns. Among the highlights is a citrine, agate, garnet and diamond necklace, estimated around $40,200 to $50,300. On Oct. 29 and 30, Sotheby's will exhibit the highlights of its upcoming Geneva and New York "Magnificent Jewels" auctions at the Royal Mirage Hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. While day one is private, day two will be open to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to view a number of rare jewels, including the "Liberator II" platinum and diamond ring by Harry Winston. The stone is one of four cut by the jeweler in 1943 from a Venezuelan rough diamond weighing 155 carats. The actual "Magnificent Jewels" European sale will take place in Geneva on Nov. 13, with an exhibition from Nov. 10-14. Taking place concurrently will be the "Important Watches" sale, also in Geneva. Among the highlights will be a fine and rare Patek Philippe automatic wristwatch in white gold with perpetual calendar and moon phases, circa 1970 (Ref. 3448G). The watch is estimated at $300,000 to $420,000. Rounding up the auction house's season is the "Jewels for the Jungle" auction, featuring a private collection of animal figures and animal-inspired jewelry pieces to be sold for the benefit of the World Wildlife Fund. Highlights include an opal and cultured-pearl "Monkey" necklace by Grima, a carved coral, chrysoprase and diamond "Ram's Head" necklace by Cartier and signed pieces from Van Cleef and Arpels. An exhibition will be held from Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Amsterdam, with the auction to take place on Dec. 4.
