Business robust at Bangkok Gems, Jewelry Fair

Bangkok, Thailand—Organizers of the 42nd Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF) have announced healthy results for the five-day show, with business reaching about $882 million and turnout holding strong.

Political unrest in the Thai capital generated safety concerns, but organizers said in a media release that the Sept. 11-15 event ran smoothly, with all 3,149 exhibitors showing as scheduled and less than a 5 percent drop in the number of visitors.

The $882 million estimated by Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA) President Vichal Assarasakorn represents about 15 percent of Thailand's total gems and jewelry exports this year.

A new jewelry design competition, the Thailand International Jewelry Awards (TIJA), was kicked off during the fair. Since the end of September, the competition has attracted some 400 applicants, and organizers expect the numbers to increase significantly by the Nov. 5 deadline.

TIJA will provide a chance for both local and international designers to garner worldwide recognition. The competition will also allow new talent to transform their design sketches into finished products, courtesy of some of Thailand's top manufacturers.

The theme for the debut competition is "World of Creativity," with daytime and eveningwear or "executive" categories. A total of 60 pieces will be chosen, split equally between the two categories. Winners will be announced at an awards party to be held in conjunction with the 43rd BGJF, scheduled for Feb. 25-March 1, 2009.

For more details on the contest, visit the TIJA Web site, TIJA2009.com. To register for the 43rd BGJF, visit the show's Web site, BangkokGemsFair.com.
