Vicenzaoro: Italian industry must modernize to compete globally

Vicenza, Italy—Organizers of the Vicenzaoro Winter Fair, which opened here on Sunday, seemed cautiously optimistic about the state of the Italian jewelry industry, which remained essentially level in the first nine months of 2006, following several years of declining statistics.

During the show's opening ceremonies, Valentino Ziche, chairman of the fair, called Italy's 0.4 percent increase in jewelry exports "positive and encouraging," but he said that Italy's small businesses must keep an eye on globalization to remain relevant in the modern world.

"The 'made in Italy' brand has always been highly appreciated all over the world at the high and middle range," he said. "Italy's backbone has always been small and medium-size companies. These companies are still the driving force in Italy's economy, but they need to use technology and modern methods to compete in the global market."

Show organizers expect the fair, running from Jan. 14-21, to draw more than 23,000 visitors from 110 countries.
