New York--The Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) is inviting female jewelry designers from all walks of the industry to submit entries for its DIVA Gives Back design competition.

The annual competition promotes and encourages jewelry design by women, and this year's event will support the work of the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.), the non-profit committed to funding educational initiatives that empower economically disadvantaged people in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource.

This year's competition categories include: Canadian Diamond Diva, Red Carpet DIVA and DIVA gives back to D.E.F.

Rio Tinto will sponsor the Canadian category, and the winning design will be manufactured by Waldman Diamond Co. Entries to this category will feature Canadian diamonds and will retail for approximately $5,000. After the competition, the winning design will be donated to the D.E.F. charity auction.

If not already created, the rendering of the winning design in the Red Carpet category will be interpreted by designer Christian Tse and will also be donated to the D.E.F. charity auction. The piece will be destined for a red carpet event and is intended to retail for less than $10,000.

Finally, the chosen design in the DIVA Gives Back to D.E.F. category must retail for less than $500 and will be considered for mass production as a fund-raising item for D.E.F.

The deadline for entries is May 4, with awards to be announced on June 1 during the WJA DIVA Awards Party at Lavo in Las Vegas' Palazzo Hotel.

The competition is open to all women, regardless of experience, training or background in jewelry or jewelry design. Entries will be judged by a panel of industry experts who will evaluate the designs based on their originality, creativity, wearability and interpretation of the competition category.

Interested designers should submit renderings or photos, mounted on an 11-inch-by-17-inch art board to: DIVA Design Competition Chair, Cindy Edelstein, 4779 Boston Post Road #203, Pelham Manor, NY 10803.

For full details and a WJA DIVA entry form, go to the WJA's Web site, Womensjewelry.org. For ticket and sponsorship information, contact the association at (708) 361-6266 or info@womensjewelry.org.

Editor's note: The WJA Diva Design Competition deadline has been extended to May 18, 2009.
