It's tiara time: You, too, can celebrate a milestone like a princess

Whether the prize of the mother-daughter pageant on CW’s reality show Crowned or accessorizing pajamas worn by Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova in a recent catalog, tiaras have become increasingly popular. There is the inexpensive variety like the silver and rhinestone tiara for $9.99 from hair accessory company Art Deco. Then there is the “as-big-as-as-your-mortgage-lock-it-in-a-safe” kind like the $455,000 diamond and colored gemstone tiara from Cartier.

Over the past year, jeweler Harry Winston sold four tiaras to a bride, a beauty queen, a celebrity and to someone who had their own personal collection. Historically, the pieces, which can take 10 months to create, were worn by royalty. They were less formal than a crown and ideal for state occasions and fancy balls. Since the U.S. does not have a royal family attitudes about tiaras tend to be more open. Susy Korb, executive vice president and creative director of Harry Winston, is working on a “user-friendly” piece—a tiara that can convert into a necklace. Designer Penny Preville currently offers one.
