San Francisco--The American Jewelry Design Council (AJDC) has announced jewelry designer Leila Tai as the grand prize winner of its 2009 New Talent Contest.

The AJDC selects one such winner each year, choosing the new talent designee on the basis of the originality, craftsmanship, innovation, marketability and cohesiveness of his or her design.

In addition to choosing Tai, the council has also selected one honorable mention: Patricia Tschetter of Tschetter Studio in Dallas.

As grand prize winner, Tai will receive an all-expense-paid booth to exhibit her collections in the New Designer Gallery of the JA New York Summer Show held in July 2009. The AJDC will also honor Tai in an award ceremony and present her with a trophy made by AJDC member Michael Good.

"Leila Tai is not a new jewelry designer in our industry, but she is certainly one of the most talented, and the council is proud to recognize her extraordinary work this year," AJDC member Alan Revere said in a media release.

Tai was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, where she studied art education at the city's American University. She went on to receive a master's in art education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and, during the 70s, studied with such prominent jewelry designers as Donald Clafflin, Robert Kulicke and Jean Stark. Over the years, she has worked as a full-time jewelry designer for Gemveto and Van Cleef and Arpels, and has become known for her masterful use of the plique-a-jour technique and for her limited-edition jewelry pieces celebrating perfection in nature.

Tai shares her passion and technical expertise with others while teaching jewelry design and rendering courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Pratt Institute in New York. She has also taught courses at the American University in Beirut, Parsons School of Design and the Revere Academy.
