Textured gold, quartz among hot trends at Feninjer

Sao Paulo, Brazil—Textured yellow gold, quartz in a variety of colors and bold geometric looks were among the top trends at Feninjer, the largest jewelry show in South America, held from Aug. 4-7 in Sao Paulo.

With 150 exhibitors and several thousand attendees, the show, produced by IBGM (Instituto Brasileiro de Gemas E Metais Precisos), is small in size but packed with fresh designs for retailers who hail mostly from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and elsewhere throughout South America.

Brazilian designers, who have long held an affinity for yellow gold, got creative with textures this year, offering a variety of pieces with gold finishes that were satiny smooth, hammered, etched with designs or some combination of all three.

In a country known for producing colored gemstones of many varieties, diamonds were not surprisingly sidelined in many designs, serving as pavé accents to large earth-toned gemstones such as smoky quartz, rutilated quartz, milky quartz, lemon quartz and green quartz. Amethyst, aquamarine, tourmaline, coral and pearl were also among the favored stones in more delicate pieces.

Translucent gemstones such as quartz were chosen as the focal point of gold cocktail rings where intricate goldwork was visible beneath the stones.

Bold yellow gold hoops and chains were hot, but variations on the classic hoop abounded. One favorite was attaching long, skinny chains to hoops featuring large, linked circles. Gemstones and pearls also brought hoops from basic to on-trend.

In a nod to Brazil itself, many designers chose floral themes and nature-inspired motifs straight out of the Amazon. Indigenous trees, the lotus flower, ocelots and waterfalls were among the inspirations for the designs.
