Police score touchdown in Super Bowl rings case

January 26, 2009

Attleboro, Mass.--Police have arrested the man they say is the mastermind behind the June robbery of a Massachusetts jewelry manufacturing plant, a take that included the rings presented to the Super Bowl XLII Champion New York Giants.

According to The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro, Mass., Sean D. Murphy, 44, of Lynn, Mass., was taken into custody on Jan. 23, charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of burglar's tools.

According to the Chronicle, police say Murphy organized the June 2008 heist in which an estimated $2 million in jewelry, gold and diamonds, including the New York Giants Super Bowl rings, were stolen from the E.A. Dion plant in Attleboro.

The thieves allegedly disabled the building's alarm, cut a hole in the roof and took a 1,000-pound safe, the Chronicle reports.

Murphy was arrested on Friday at his condominium in Lynn, where state, local and federal authorities executed a search warrant and seized 12 gold rings--including a demo Super Bowl ring--gems and coins connected to the theft and estimated at about $100,000, the Chronicle reports.

In addition, police executed search warrants for Murphy's vehicles and business, North Shore Movers, and found papers with descriptions of various businesses pinpointed as targets for a potential break-in and receipts for gold Murphy allegedly sold.

Arrested with Murphy were his girlfriend and another Massachusetts woman, who was wearing a gold ring and a 1.5-carat diamond believed to be linked to the theft.

According to the Chronicle, the women are charged with receiving stolen property but are not tied directly to the break-in at E.A. Dion.
