U.K. jewelers join boycott of proposed Alaska mine

London--Six U.K. jewelry retailers representing 260 stores have pledged not to buy gold from the proposed Pebble mine in Alaska.

The retailers--April Doubleday, Beaverbrooks, Fifi Bijoux, Goldsmiths, Mappin and Webb, and Watches of Switzerland--join eight U.S. retailers in boycotting metals from the mine, which is stirring up controversy in the Land of the Midnight Sun because of its potential impact on the environment.

The mine, a project of mining company Anglo American PLC and Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., would be an open-pit copper and gold mine extending over more than 30 square miles of the Bristol Bay watershed in Alaska.

Some of the world's most productive salmon-spawning rivers flow into Bristol Bay, the site of the world's largest commercial sockeye fishery.

Opponents--including U.S. retail jewelers Ben Bridge Jeweler, Helzberg Diamonds, Leber Jeweler, Michael's Jewelers and Tiffany and Co., who have pledged to boycott gold from the mine--claim the mine would be detrimental to both the environment and the cultures that depend on the fishery for survival.

But Anglo-American contends that the mine would bring much-needed jobs to the area.

A delegation of native Alaskans and commercial fishermen are currently in London to confront Anglo-American (whose annual shareholders' meeting is scheduled for Wednesday) as well as its Chief Executive Officer Cynthia Carroll about the Pebble mine project.

"The support demonstrated by these respected U.K. jewelers is greatly appreciated and will help us protect the wild salmon fishery that has sustained our economy and people for generations," delegation member Thomas Tilden, of the Choggiung Native Corp., said.
