'Nature of Diamonds' exhibit to dazzle again

October 21, 2009
On loan from Siegelson, these diamond "black lace" cuff bracelets by Michelle Ong are part of "The Nature of Diamonds" exhibit currently on view at The Field Museum in Chicago.

Chicago--The American Museum of Natural History, along with Janet Zapata, jewelry specialist and historian, and Dr. George Harlow, curator, have reorganized "The Nature of Diamonds" exhibit for a new, international tour, which is appearing at The Field Museum in Chicago from Oct. 17, 2009-March 28, 2010.

According to a media release from Siegelson, which is loaning diamond pieces to the exhibit, The Nature of Diamonds explores all facets of the extraordinary mineral, from its geological origins to its place in history, art, adornment and literature, to its uses in modern technology and research.

The exhibition will feature many historically and scientifically significant gems on loan from collections around the world.

Several highlights of the exhibit include:

--A specially designed walk-in vault containing dazzling diamond objects.

--A historical gallery presenting an overview of diamonds, including examples of jewelry fashioned over four centuries, as well as portraits in which the subjects wear exceptional diamond adornments.

--A re-created diamond lapidary workshop, where cutters from the diamond trade demonstrate and explain the techniques of faceting diamonds.

--A variety of interactive displays, including a hands-on model of the crystal structure of a diamond, offering visitors an opportunity to test the mineral's extraordinary strength.

--A large-screen computer animation illustrating how diamonds are brought to Earth' surface from deep inside the interior and how diamond pipes are formed.

--A mine tunnel that intersects a re-created diamond pipe.

--A special focus on Canada, which has become the world's third-largest producer of gem-quality diamonds since opening its first diamond mine in 1998.

In addition, works on loan from Siegelson include a diamond corsage brooch by Theodore Fester, Paris, circa 1855; a late Belle Epoque diamond pendant necklace by Boucheron, Paris, October 1911; and a pair of diamond "black lace" cuff bracelets by Michelle Ong for Carnet, Hong Kong, 2000.

According to the release, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Houston Museum of Natural Science and The Field Museum in Chicago all collaborated on the exhibit, which attracted scientific and critical praise during its first tour, which was seen by nearly 1.5 million people.
