Los Angeles--Maybe the cusp of the holiday season has the stars in a festive spirit, or perhaps it's simply the American Music Awards' playful, laidback vibe, but the attendees of last night's awards show were ready to party.
Among the most favored looks in apparel were short, shimmery dresses embellished with light-catching rhinestones, sequins and paillettes. And when it came to topping off their looks with jewelry, too much shine wasn't a concern, with the stars prevalently accessorizing with the most dazzling of jewels: diamonds.
Among the numerous performers showing off high-shine looks were Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige and Shakira.
Underwood glittered in long, shoulder-grazing drop earrings, a diamond bracelet and a ring, all adding extra sparkling to her one-shoulder, embellished gold lamé dress.
Lopez hit the stage in a futuristic gold frock and a 5-carat diamond wraparound ring by Ofira, and walked the red carpet in Lorraine Schwartz black and colorless diamond geometric circle earrings, plus a white gold and diamond encrusted wraparound twisted cuff and dome diamond ball ring.
Blige selected more than $800,000 worth of Lorraine Schwartz jewels, including 30-carat diamond encrusted geometric earrings and a diamond mesh cuff to accent the sequined snakeskin print dress she wore to perform. Meanwhile, Shakira selected Ofira's black gold, black and colorless diamond ring and blackened diamond bangles to match her bright yellow mini accented with cutouts and shining metallic stripes. Attendee Kate Hudson, meanwhile, shined in a metallic silver frock accented with Anita Ko's white gold and diamond ring earrings, plus two white gold and diamond spike bracelets and a white gold pavé band.
In addition to all the shimmering, embellished dresses to hit the red carpet, a cutout theme was another big trend in AMA wardrobing. Rihanna epitomized the look in an origami-style Marchesa gown, complete with cutout roses, while Couples Retreat actress Kristen Bell combined both the shimmering and cutout themes, wearing a Christian Cota silver bandeau and skirt, showing just a tiny peek of midriff. Both went for Neil Lane, with Rihanna choosing diamond and platinum studs and two black and colorless diamond and platinum rings, while Bell selected Lane's moonstone, platinum, diamond and sapphire cocktail ring. Rihanna also added a third ring to her look: Sutra's rose-cut "3x3" diamond ring.
Wearing multiple rings on one hand, as Rihanna did, proved to be a favored look for the evening, with American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert repeating the style with a mixture of darkened metals and brassy golds.
While Lambert drew attention for a racy performance, eyes were on the stage when Jay-Z won for favorite male hip-hop artist, which he accepted while wearing a Martin Katz diamond lapel ring and pin.
It wasn't all diamonds at the awards, though. Among the gemstone sightings was former American Idol judge Paula Abdul in Neil Lane's garnet and platinum bangles, and Demi Lovato in Tacori's "18K925" ring featuring rose amethyst set over pink mother-of-pearl.
