WJA Twin Cities honors 'People's Choice' winners

October 29, 2009

Minneapolis--The Women's Jewelry Association (WJA)--Twin Cities chapter has named four jewelry designers in the Twin Cities People's Choice Awards.

An exhibition to highlight the winners took place during the WJA--Twin City's Designer Showcase, an event held in September to promote jewelry design talent in the upper Midwest to area retail jewelers.

Danny Saathoff of Robbinsdale, Minn., was the first-place winner in the People's Choice Awards and was recognized for "individual artifacts" that he organizes and builds out of discarded bits of scrap. The artifacts create historical richness, while the aged patinas and rusted metals contribute beauty and texture, the WJA described in a media release.

Second place went to Stephen Vincent of Minneapolis-based Studio Vincent. The designer was honored for his "SV Studio Collection" of minimal, precious-metal jewelry featuring conflict-free Lazare Kaplan diamonds, precious and semi-precious gems hand-set in platinum, palladium and 18-karat gold.

Tying for third place were Julie Burkhart-Haid of Burkhart Design Studio in Hudson, Wis., and David Lee of David Lee Jeweler in Mason City, Iowa. Burkhart-Haid creates contemporary micro-mosaic and mini-mosaic designs inspired by nature and vernacular art, and rendered in 14-karat and 18-karat gold with diamonds and colored stones. Lee's focus, meanwhile, is on durable and timeless designs, and his handcrafted pieces each bear a unique serial number and his personal signature.

Other Minnesota designers exhibiting in the Designer Showcase included: Andrew Bugher of Andrew Bugher Design in Little Canada, Britta Kauppila of Britta Lynn Design in St. Paul, Donna Menne of Dar Via Designs in Golden Valley, Kathy Kuhl of Kuhl Studio in Chanhassen, Mary Hartmann of Mary Hartmann Designs in Bloomington and Minneapolis-based jewelers Killian Rieder of Chamilia, Marianne Richmond of Marianne Richmond Studios and Susan Frerichs of Susan Elnora Metalworks.

Co-chairs of the Twin Cities People's Choice Awards and Designer Showcase were Janel Russell of Janel Russell Designs and Nancy Moeller of R.F. Moeller Jeweler.
