Disney, Mouawad line caters to 'princess' brides

This platinum diamond engagement ring inspired by Disney's Belle, heroine of "Beauty and the Beast," features a 1-carat rose-cut center diamond, with a 0.37-carat band.

New York--Once upon a time, couture clothing designer Kirstie Kelly began designing a line of wedding gowns inspired by the fairest princesses of them all: the ones created by Disney.

Today, Kelly has expanded her offerings, designing a line of diamond engagement rings and wedding bands branded "Kirstie Kelly for Disney by Mouawad." The line, which represents Kelly's first foray into the world of fine jewelry design, debuted Tuesday at the Intercontinental Barclay Hotel in New York as part of Bridal Fashion Week in New York.

Displayed against a backdrop of Kelly's Disney character-inspired wedding gowns, bridesmaids' and flower girl dresses called "Kirstie Kelly for Disney Fairytale Weddings," the line consists of six rings with matching wedding bands.

Each ring and its matching band, like the wedding dresses, were designed in the spirit of a one of six Disney princesses, including the classic princesses Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty and modern-day heroines, including Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, Ariel from The Little Mermaid; and Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

"It's different, in the sense that there's a story behind each princess," Kelly said.

For example, the ring that was designed based on Belle from 1991's Beauty and the Beast, features a rose-cut diamond, a play on the enchanted rose that played an important role in the film. It can also be used to hold diamonds of other cuts.

The Disney line, sold as semi-mounts, retail for $1,200 to $6,000. Mouawad will be selling the Kirstie Kelly for Disney bridal jewelry to retailers throughout the United States and the rings also will be available through Mouawad's web site.
