MJSA calls for entries to Vision Awards

Attleboro Falls, Mass.--Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) is now accepting entries for the 19th annual MJSA Vision Awards Design Competition, celebrating outstanding talent in the field of jewelry design.

The competition this year will include a new "Visionary Technical Solution" category, as well as an expanded range of prizes, from gift certificates to scholarships to featured ad placements in leading industry trade journals.

The Visionary Technical Solution category will honor outstanding technical achievement. The category is intended for designs in which specific technical challenges--such as combining two non-complementary metals--were overcome to take the piece from concept to completion.

Additional categories include "Design Excellence," "Laser Distinction" and "Gold Distinction."

The Design Excellence category is for designs that exhibit exceptional creativity, craftsmanship and marketability, while the designs in the remaining two categories must be crafted with the use of the material in the category name. For Gold Distinction, entries must include a minimum of 75 percent of a karat gold alloy.

Independent or company-employed jewelry designers are invited to submit entries to the above categories, and students enrolled in jewelry-related programs can also take part in the competition by submitting rendered designs for the "Future of the Industry Award." All submissions must be postmarked by Jan. 15, 2010.

Vision Award winners will be honored at a March 16 ceremony to be held during MJSA Expo New York, taking place March 14-16, 2010. Winning entries will be displayed at the Expo, and will be featured in special ad pages within InStore and Metalsmith magazines, as well as in the MJSA Journal.

The grand prize Design Excellence winner will receive a $1,000 gift certificate from Rio Grande, and the first-place Visionary Technical Solution winner will receive a $500 gift certificate. Second-place winners in the Design Excellence and Visionary Technical Solution categories will receive a full library of MJSA Press publications, valued up to $372.

First-place winners in the Laser Distinction and Gold Distinction categories will receive $500 cash awards, and second-place Distinction winners will receive $250 cash rewards.

As for the Future of the Industry category, the first-place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the MJSA Education Foundation, payable to any jewelry design, jewelry making or other jewelry-related degree program at a U.S. college, university or technical school. The second-place winner will receive a $500 scholarship.
