Heart pendant to benefit Doctors Without Borders

June 29, 2009
Anna Ruth Henriques' "Mini Heart" pendant retails for $395, and all proceeds will help in efforts to provide emergency medical aid to people in need.

New York--Jewelry designer Anna Ruth Henriques is asking consumers to give a piece of their hearts to benefit Doctors Without Borders.

The Jamaican artist and designer has crafted a new "Mini Heart" pendant molded in the form of a human heart. Retailing for $395, the pendant hangs from an organic cotton chord and is made from sterling silver and 18-karat yellow gold with ruby accents.

"Having grown up in Jamaica, I watched as entire communities lived without access to good medical care," Henriques said in a media release. "They suffered from poverty, a shortage of doctors and modern medical equipment."

Henriques' great-uncle, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who worked in the Kingston Public Hospital, told Henriques of scenes in which ill people would be lying in the hallway for days, awaiting care. Years later, her great-uncle invited American interns to Jamaica to gain hands-on experience with him and put their skills to use for the benefit of people in need.

"The interns occasionally came to my family's house for Sunday brunch where I realized the gift of their skills was mutually beneficial, because it also opened the interns' eyes and hearts to another corner of the world," Henriques said.

All proceeds from sales of the heart pendant, available exclusively at Barneys New York and online at GiveALittlePieceofYourHeart.com, will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from healthcare in more than 60 countries.

For Henriques, modeling the design after the anatomical human heart was a natural course of action. The designer's signature pieces are of a nature-inspired, organic bent, featuring leaf and insect motifs realized in fine metals and precious stones.
