MJSA programs help jewelers comply with lead law

Providence, R.I.--Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) is now offering members two quality-control programs that will help companies comply with the new federal restrictions on lead in children's jewelry.

One program provides expert lab services to fulfill the lead law's third-party lab requirement at special prices negotiated by MJSA.

ESS Laboratory, a division of Thielsch Engineering in Cranston, R.I., and accredited by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, will test jewelry for MJSA members at rates at least 18 percent below its standard rates. (The lab might offer higher discounts to large-volume customers.)

In addition, ESS is a resource for companies whose customers demand certification that components, raw materials or finished jewelry meet the federal lead standards (600 parts per million (ppm) now, 300 ppm beginning Aug. 14, 2009) even though the goods are not subject to a government testing requirement.

ESS will also work to help customers recover their precious metals from the acid solution used for testing if sufficient quantities are involved.

And because lead tests are bound to turn up trouble at some companies, the second MJSA program gives members access to a select pool of jewelry manufacturing experts, including J. Tyler Teague, James Troiano and Kris Vaithinathan. (John McCloskey and Howard Schachter also might participate.) All have decades of experience at companies such as Engelhard, Hoover and Strong, Monet and Stuller. They will be available on-site or by phone to help diagnose problems and find solutions at special member rates.

For more information, contact MJSA's Gerry Davies at (800) 444-6572 ext. 3051 or gerry.davies@mjsa.org, or ESS's John Gaspari at (401) 461-7181 or jgaspari@thielsch.com.

Founded in 1903, MJSA is a national trade association based in Providence, R.I., that provides the resources and support necessary for U.S.-based jewelry designers, manufacturers and suppliers to compete successfully. For more information about MJSA, visit its Web site, MJSA.org.
