California jeweler says 'No Doom and Gloom'

Gems of La Costa, based in Carlsbad, Calif., is handing out these "No Doom and Gloom" stickers.

Carlsbad, Calif.--Retail jeweler Gems of La Costa is battling negative economic news in its own way: with a positive attitude.

The Southern California retailer has been displaying signs that read "No Hablo Recesion" (which means "I don't speak recession" in Spanish) and handing out "No Doom and Gloom" stickers to customers.

While store owner Dale Condy said in a media release that he believes it is necessary to be informed about the current economic situation, the retailer's take is that too much "doom and gloom reporting" makes it harder to stay positive. With the new signs and stickers, he and his team are encouraging the media to reduce such reporting.

"We seem to have struck a nerve and are finding that many others agree," Condy said. "We've had overwhelming positive customer response to these signs and stickers and we're now getting media coverage."

Local television shows and newspapers, including the San Diego Union Tribune, have picked up the story, and Gems of La Costa is spreading the word even further with a new blog, NoDoomGloom.blogspot.com.
