Jewelers weigh in on sprucing up store interiors

November 25, 2009
Lighting is just one part of store design that bears consideration. These bowl pendant lights, from left, "The Cypola" and "The Electric Sunset," are from Meyda Lighting. (800) 222-4009 or Meyda.com

New York--For its regular "Regional Report," National Jeweler asked retailers around the country what they would like to change--or what they have already changed--about their store interiors.

Their responses, divided by U.S. region, are below:

Northeast

  • "The colors. We have a light yellow that doesn't work well with the stones so we're going to change to a cool blue," says Marnie Goral, Christie's Fine Jewelry, Manchester, Conn.
  • "We had water damage recently, and my ceiling looks like a war zone. My priority is to fix it, and then worry about changing the interior," says Dennis O'Neal, O'Neal's 14K Gold Horse Jewelry & Equestrian Gifts, Laurel, Del.

Southeast

  • "We just moved 18 months ago and totally updated our store. We're displaying more silver with precious stones, which we hadn't done before," says Sam Morataya,  Afram Jewelers, Washington, D.C.
  • "We've changed the main color from light beige to chocolate brown, which makes the showcases really jump out. We've removed everything from the walls to make the showroom look more spacious, and closed off the repair room," says Jim Rizzo, Rizzo Jewelers, Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Midwest

  • "I like it the way I've got it; I've had the same interior for several years and it's an inviting look," says Marc Wolenhaupt, Wolenhaupt's Jewelry, Centralia, Ill.
  • "We'd like to change the window treatments, and might do so in a year, but right now, sales are down so much that we can't contemplate any change," says Rick Walker, Argentum Jewelry, Bloomington, Ind.
  • "We recently took some extra space, so we created a private lounge area and some bigger back-office space," says Harry Glinberg, Harry C. Glinberg Jewelers, Wauwatosa, Wis.

South Central

  • "I'd like new cases, displays, carpet, walls. I'd minimize the giftware and make bridal more of a focal point. I'd give our customers more of a sitting area," says Bruce Magee, Dallmeyer's Jewelry, Jefferson City, Mo.
  •  "We did a major renovation a few years ago, with new showcases and a lot of other changes. We recently bought a whole new software system, so we're going to absorb that expense before we think about other changes," says Bridget Russell, Gayles Jewelers, Bogalusa, La.
  • "I'm not planning on any changes. I work out of an upstairs office and that's good enough for me, especially the way business is," says Leonard Ropfogel,  Jewels Boutique, Wichita, Kan.
West

  • "I'd like to see a scanning device, so we'd have a running inventory. We've been open since1915 and this is a great store. But some modernization would make it easier," says Janet Hollinger, W.R. Adams and Son, Sparks, Nev.
  • "Our current lighting is pretty warm, and it gives our diamonds a yellowish cast, so we're looking into other options. The question is, can we afford them?" says Natasha Henderson, Saxon's Fine Jewelers, Bend, Ore.
